A WALK THROUGH THE BASQUE COUNTRY...

The Basque country spreads itself from the slopes of the Spanish mountains to the Occidental French Pyrenees. Four of the Provinces lie inside the Spanish territory and three exist in France. .

In spite of the political divisions the seven provinces of Basques country are obstinately steadfast on every Basques matter.

"ZAZPIAK BAT"....

However, this does not explain the linguistic community. Any visitors on their return will not miss the constant interrogation : who are you? where do you come from? since when? when? Are you from Caucasus or from somewhere further again? And what do you think of our people? The prodominance of the blood group O can be put down to the reluctance of the Basques people to associate themselves with the outsides of their figmental country. They have even developed their own traits, with facial features, skin colour etc.

So many questions go unanswered. What are the origins of the Euskara language for example? The key to the mystery lie undiscovered. The recent theories confirm that the Basque origin lies unknown. The beliefs are that there was no (e.g Roman) oppression and here lies roots beyond written history. Euskara Herri (Euskara country) and its language could belong to one of the oldest civilisations in Occidental Europe.

On the "Pilgrims' way to Santiago" in the Basques stretch, we can dispell past and present as the two merge in the spirit of the pilgrimage.

It starts at the town of Biarritz where the presence of the sea is a contributing factor in encouraging people to see the sights of the Basque country. Coastal towns are regarded as ³Blue Country² towns such as Anglet and St Jean de Luz. Before the surfers had inhabited these parts it was the whale hunters who dominated these waters.

On this uneven route which leads us from St. Palais to the beatiful church of Harambelz, the pilgrim's track leads us to the inland "Green country". Here we can find beautiful, white houses with red window shutters complete this verdure painting.

From this landscape there eminates an isolated feeling but this impression little by little is obliterated by the many routes which furrow accross the coutryside "en route" to Spain...

A DIVIDED TERRITORY.....

The Basque country is shared between France and Spain in three administrative entities. Three of the seven originally Basque provinces are regrouped in the north, in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques : Soule, Labourd and Basse Navarre. These provinces do not have self-government. On the other side of the border, in the south, the autonomic Basque community or Euskadi includes : Alava, Biscaye and Guipuzcoa as well as the self governed community of Navarre. Since 1981, Euskadi arranges a government, with parliament which has power over the economic domain, culture, the educational structure and the policing of the area. The main part of Basques countryis situated in Spain 17,600km2 as opposed to a mere 2860 km2. The population of the south is in excess of 2.7 million whereas there are hardly 250,000 in the north of the Bidasoa river. The district of Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz has about 100,000 enhabitants. The main Basque Euskadi town is Bilbao (Bilbo in Basque) there are 370,000 inhabitants followed by Vitoria (Gastiez) which is the administrative capital and the chair of government with 210,000 inhabitants. Next there is San Sebastien (Donostia) with a population of 175,000. Pampelune (Iruna) is the capital of Navarre with a total of 180,000 people.
